March 14th, 2017 - Agra to Ranthambhore, India

Left the hotel in Agra and drove to Fatehpur Sikri, built by Emperor Akbar in 1569. This complex of red sandstone buildings was the capital of the Mughal Empire for fourteen years (1571-1585). Fatehpur originally had a circumference of about seven miles and had seven gates.

Next stop along the way to this evening destination was to see Chand Baori, a huge stepwell, or water reservoir that seemed to be in the middle of nowhere.

Continued our long drive through the villages and countryside and finally arrived at our destination for the next two days – The Tigress Ranthambhore. The last photo is not a monument we visited, but the entry to our  hotel and it was just as lovely inside, filled with wonderful new foods and gracious staff.

The long time spent in the car today was interesting and very colorful. No need for traffic signs, no one would pay attention anyway. All the guide books advise against renting a car here, instead recommending that one hire a driver – I would wholeheartedly agree. Most cars here have no airbags, but loud horns that are in constant use. We were told numerous times that in order to drive in India one needs three things – a good horn, good brakes and good luck!
