Todays' port of call, Nanortalik, a small island off the mainland coast, was
a smaller version of Qaqortoq, with a population of about 1,300. The
Greenlandic name means "place of bears". Polar bears are occasional and
unwelcome guests here in the late spring and early summer, as they drift in
on ice floes. No bear sightings today.
The locals were successful fishing this morning, as evidenced by the items
being brought ashore. The winter will be dark, long and hard here, time to
start stocking up on provisions.
a three star establishment.
Stopped in the local grocery store - like a mini Walmart. The store had just
about anything one might need; groceries, toiletries, clothing, hardware,
appliances and even a big screen TV.
At one point during the day I saw some of the crew from the ship in a boat,
hacking away at some ice. Evidently they were gathering it to provide the
guests with some "glacier ice" treats - amazing the lengths they will go to
in order to surprise and please us.
Finished off the day with dinner in the Tamarind for "An Evening of
Rijsttafel". Great fun with the staff all dressed in traditional Indonesian
costumes and the special menu was delicious.
