tour of the city. Alternate sunshine and pouring rain, not the best day for
a walking tour - but here I am!
I got a good shot of the ship from the sightseeing boat, the ship is so
large that this can be very difficult from shore. Also, along the cruise
one of the factories we passed was the ship building factory producing many
new Viking river cruise ships, never done one of these, will have to add
this to my bucket list.
As we approached Rostock, there must have been a hundred tiny sailboats out
- with people taking lessons on the windy water - great chance to either
capsize or hone ones' skills.
Visited the Rostock University Square, founded in 1419, it is the oldest
university in the Baltic. This university has awarded two honorary
doctorates, one to Albert Einstein. Hitler wanted this honor rescinded
because Einstein was Jewish. The wise professors used a unique weapon to
avoid this - one that is still very popular today - that weapon was
bureaucracy. The paperwork kept being forwarded from one desk and department
to another and being lost at times, until finally, the war was over and the
honorary distinction for Einstein was never rescinded.
Last stop after walking around in Rostock was at a local micro-brewery. Do
not like beer - had no problem finding someone to drink my mug - but I did
not share the German pretzel.
Ended the day back at the ship at a German Bierfest - Oompah Band and all!
