The island has more than three million people and their living conditions
are not the best. They have no industry and support themselves mainly by
farming and making handicrafts. Many here leave to work in Malaysia,
Singapore and Saudi Arabia.
I started the morning with a drive through the city of Mataram as we headed
to Lingsar Temple, built in 1714.
Had a stop at the Sayang Art Market where the local craftsmen gave
demonstrations and had their wares displayed for sale.
Last stop was the Nusa Tengara Barat Museum to see its collections of
artifacts.
Got back to the ship just as the afternoon showers arrived to cool things
down.
Holland America calls this one of their "off the beaten path" destinations.
The bay where the ship anchored is beautiful and certainly lived up to that
description.
