Edinburgh is built like Rome and Istanbul, on seven hills, making for a striking backdrop for the pageant of history. Well established by 1100, Edinburgh was recognized as the capital of Scotland by 1350. All of this prior to the arrival of Columbus to the Americas and the arrival of Pilgrims to North America.
Touring the city I was amazed by how the area had changed since my last visit twenty years ago. They even have a Hard Rock Cafe here now (not necessarily a good change). Another great guide and four hour history lesson as we drove all around the city (even better, no test). Some streets were so crowded with tourists that it was difficult for vehicles to maneuver. It felt more like Rome or London.
Great show last night with traditional music and dancing.
I did visit the Royal Yacht Britannia, Queen Elizabeth's former floating palace. No shortage of pampering for the royal family with 220 crew. The yacht is now owned and cared for by a charitable trust, which I am sure makes the taxpayers happy.
Found where the "Angels Share" goes to, (the whiskey that evaporates during distilling is called the Angels Share).
Still need to make it back some August for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and to spend more time at the National Museum of Scotland.
Weather update - sunny the first day, sun and clouds the second, and just enough rain so one would not forget what it felt like!
