in the 6th century was once a busy port between India and the Mediterranean.
The city suffered earthquake damage, attacks by the Crusaders and Ottomans
and only began thriving again when it was taken back from the Ottomans
during WW1.
Besides being a thriving and important port for Jordan, it has become a busy
tourist stop with access to the Red Sea's corals, wreck-dives and for access
to Petra, Jordan's "Lost City".
The views in port are very dramatic and beautiful with the mountains
surrounding the waters. In the 13th photo one can see Israel across the bay,
and in the 18th photo you see the mountains of Jordan on the right and the
Israeli mountains on the left.
The two hour drive to Petra provided some spectacular scenery and a chance
to see how some of the people lived and how they have adapted to some very
harsh conditions.
