February 22nd - Komodo Island, Indonesia

The scenery from the ship this morning was breathtaking - so green and lush
- the island looked mystical, especially with the clouds at the top of the
hills.

This is the home of the Komodo Dragon, which can reach lengths of 11 feet
and weigh more than 300 pounds. It is a carnivore preying on the deer, wild
pigs and buffalo on the island. Such nice fellows, they also eat their own
young. I got a shot of five deer that I would guess were fattening up to
become venison for the giant lizards.

In addition to the lizards, the island also has these pretty white mushrooms
that will also fly you to the moon - i.e. they will kill you and you will
float up to heaven if eaten.

The ship had requested that people not throw food and clothing overboard for
the inhabitants, but watching the antics of the boys while waiting for the
ship to pull up anchor, it was tempting.
