Scotland's Outer Hebrides are known to be rainy and cold, but I woke up to glorious sunshine. The first photo is of the stunning sunset last night. The photos at the end of the post show the sun making its' entry this morning, and it stayed with us all day!
Stornoway, located on the eastern coast of the Isle of Lewis is the capital of the Outer Hebrides and was founded by the Vikings in the ninth century. The sheltered harbor is the reason for Stornoway's existence. The Vikings named it "Steering Bay", which when phonetically translated, became the name Stornoway.
We took a ride across the isle through the old peat fields, before connecting to the Hebridean Way. The first stop was the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse, the windiest place in the UK with amazing views from the cliffs. Next we visited the the twelfth century church of St Moluag before heading back to Stornoway and the ship.
