Today's destination was The Needles District in the Southeast corner of
Canyonlands National Park. It is named for the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa
Sandstone in the area.
Took a side trip along the way to enjoy the rim views at the Needles
Overlook. Heading on down the road the next stop was at Newspaper Rock
Archaeological Site, a petroglyph panel etched in sandstone that records
approximately 2000 years of early human activity dating back to as early as
1300 BC.
Finally arrived at The Needles. Drove and hiked around taking in all the
sights. Because of the distance, this park does not have the heavy traffic
that some of the others have - so one can enjoy, without having to deal with
crowds on trails, or jostling for a parking space.
Long drive back to the hotel in Moab.
