lagoon and snorkel tour.
Fantastic day swimming with the sharks, rays and even a few eels. As you can
see in the picture one was pretty big. The guide had me float and then took
hold of my feet and pushed me forward to get close enough for some good
shots with my underwater camera. Still learning how to use it, it is
difficult to see what you are taking pictures of when you also have on your
mask.
We started off touring the bays and learning about what one needed to know
to sail in these waters. A German ship did not know the dangers, and in 1940
hit the reef and exploded, the remains of the ship are still visible. We
were told some of the off-spring of the soldiers are also still around, not
sure if that was a factual statement, but it did get the laughs he was
looking for.
Next it was off to take our first dive in the water to feed the rays and get
up close and personal with the sharks. Of course it is becoming old hat for
me (Ha), but it is great to see people who have never done it and their
reactions. Especially the rays, they like to come right up to you and let
you pet them (they are actually looking for food).
Then it was off to the private motu (small island) for refreshments and our
BBQ. But first we had to have a lesson in the preparation of ceviche - raw
tuna with salt, onions, cucumber, tomatoes that is soaked in coconut milk.
There was to be no free lunch! There was also cooked chicken and fish for
those who prefer not to eat raw fish. I happen to think it is yummy. It is
probably the only thing over here that is actually cheaper than in the US,
and I am sure much fresher too.
We were allowed to snorkel some more while they cleaned everything up. Then
it was back to school. Believe me when I tell you he would not take no for
an answer, he would not start until everyone had gathered around. The guide
then demonstrated the proper was to "peel" and harvest a coconut. It was
actually quite entertaining.
After the long day in the sun and water it was time to head back. Great day
and a good tour.

creatures of the deep, and the two-legged ones of the land.
