caught up with us this morning, not starting to clear up until the
afternoon. The pouring rain did not provide many photo ops.
Headed out of the city to the Ockero. Halso and Hano islands in the northern
archipelago visiting a folklore center with buildings dating back to the
Middle Ages.
As the weather began to clear, I spent some time enjoying the sights of
Gothenburg. The fish market is called the church since it looks like a
church and the casino is located in the building that thousands of Swedes
passed through on their way to America.
The city is home to the largest university and technical institute in Sweden
- more than 60,000 students in this city of half a million, so it was not
surprising there was some kind of student demonstration going on - I would
guess with this many students, that this might be a daily affair.
This is the land of Volvo - they produce the automobiles, trucks, buses and
boat motors here (the car company is now owned by China).
At one point they were one of the largest ship builders in the world, but
when they could no longer compete with the Asian ship builders, they all
went bankrupt. The Eriksberg crane is located on the former sight of the
largest shipyard and has now been converted into a residential area.
