The weather was a little cooler upon arrival in Helsinki this morning, but
still quite nice.
This capital city is located on the Gulf of Finland and is surrounded by
water on three sides.
Because of its northern location, they are currently experiencing days with
up to 22 hours of daylight. Supposedly Finland has the highest coffee
consumption rate per capita in the world - probably to keep them awake
during the long, dark and cold winter days!
The imposing Helsinki Lutheran Cathedral (currently being renovated)
overlooks Senate Square. This is also the home of the Rock Church - built
entirely into bedrock and quarried stone and covered with a copper roof -
pictures cannot capture the uniqueness of this structure.
The silver monument of 600 steel pipes in Sibelius Park is to honor the
Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius.
Enjoyed a lovely day exploring the city, which was much less crowded and
hectic than St. Petersburg. Planning on exploring the area by boat on my
return in a couple of weeks.
