February 22nd - Island Fashion

I took my walk a little later this morning so I could visit a store that I
liked.
I needed a new swimsuit - let me rephrase that - I wanted a new swimsuit.
For a girl, swimsuits are like shoes, you can always use another.
The shop is called "Island Fashion Black Pearls" and their selection of
swimsuits is extensive and their prices are fair.
It is owned by Ron Hall, who according to Jan Prince's guide to Tahiti "is
an American from California who sailed to Tahiti with Peter Fonda aboard the
yacht Tatoosh in the mid 70s and settled in Moorea. Some of his customers
return time and again to add to their collection from his impressive
selection of quality pearls and jewelry. He also carries bikinis, beach
wear, pareos and Hawaiian style shirts". I should also add that it is
air-conditioned.
He has this shop and another one at the Cook's Bay Center that is only open
when ships are in port. He married a Tahitian and has two grown children.
I was very fortunate this morning because operating the store today was,
Tonia. She is the sister-in-law of Ron Hall. In between trying on (and
rejecting) many swimsuits I had a wonderful conversation with Tonia. I
learned a lot more about the island, their politics, economy, employment and
family life.
She was raised in Tahiti and now lives on what used to be her grandparent's
property here in Moorea. In addition to her sister here in Moorea, she has
five brothers who have houses in the hills of Tahiti on the property that
belonged to her parents. She said it is a large piece of property.
You have to be French or Polynesian to own property here, and she said that
since I like it so much, I should find a husband here, and then I could
enjoy the best of two worlds, America and French Polynesia. Hmmmm..probably
not.
She was just delightful and I ended up leaving the store with more than one
swimsuit. Oh well.
I wanted to get a picture of Tonia for my blog, so I went back after lunch
and taking a dip in the pool with my new swimsuit. In addition to enjoying
time with her again, I got to meet and talk with her nephew Heimata Hall.
Lovely people and a shop I recommend you put on your do not miss list when
visiting here.
