August 10th - Beaufort, South Carolina

Before leaving the St. Augustine area, I made my obligatory stop at the
outlets - they happen to have a Tommy Bahama outlet here, so I try to stop
here whenever I am in the area - I could not believe my luck - 70% off all
women's wear in the store!!! Took a couple of hours to do some power
shopping.

Got on I-95 to make up for some lost travel time on the road. It is really
something to see all the snowbirds heading back home. There was probably
only one Florida plate for every ten of the other states and Canadian plates
and the traffic was very heavy. I am told that the following week the
traffic will be even heavier.

Stopped in the picturesque old port town of Beaufort, South Carolina. It has
many pre-Revolutionary War and antebellum houses surrounded by quiet gardens
and tree canopied streets. This is the second oldest town in South Carolina
and dates to the Spanish exploration in 1520.

Took a carriage ride and enjoyed listening to our somewhat "crusty and
opinionated" guide. She really knew the history and it was obvious she loved
horses. She was definitely not a supporter of Barbra Streisand, nor were
many of the other residents - I guess she made quite an impression when she
was here filming The Prince of Tides. So much so, that when she complained
about the noise of the planes, in response the commander made a special fly
by with all of his planes about 6 in the morning letting her know that it
was only the sound of freedom.

After the carriage ride, heading back to the motel I got to hear and see the
sound of freedom. Stopped in a parking lot to watch what was going on and
discovered that the Blue Angels were practicing for the Air Show that was to
be on the following two days - well as you can guess, this required a change
of plans - no way was I going to miss this!
