Like so many road trips, some days require a lot of time in the car, today
was that day. At least I did not have to do any driving. I could watch the
scenery and towns go by and doze whenever, making the miles seem to pass by
quicker. The fields that had been left fallow were covered with red,
lavender and yellow flowers.
We left the lovely Riad Sapphire and Marrakech after breakfast and said our
goodbyes to the wonderful staff.
Then began our "travel day" to Fes (aka Fez). We traveled through lots of
small towns along the way, many appearing deserted and/or dying. Like in the
United States, people want to move closer to the bigger cities with all
their conveniences and more job opportunities. The five year drought that
began in 1991 certainly did not help these communities stay alive.
Made a stop at the city of Ifrane. Built in 1929 during the French
protectorate, the goal was to create a "European-like" vacation spot in the
Atlas Mountains. At an elevation of 5,460 feet, it is nicknamed "Morocco's
Switzerland" due to the Swiss like architecture and skiing close by. Would
never have guessed that there would be skiing in Morocco.
After the day spent primarily on the road, we finally made it to Fes and
checked into another Riad in the Medina (Old Town).
