The day started off great - I went out on deck to check out what the day
might hold - beautiful landscape and perfect weather!
Took the tender into shore and headed to Mossman Gorge. Along the way I was
able to enjoy the countryside. There was sugarcane growing everywhere and I
got to see the "cane train".
The Mossman Gorge is in a Wet Tropics World Heritage Area of the Daintree
Rainforest 20 miles north of Port Douglas. Took a walk on one of the trails
to the Mossman River Lookout and the Rex Creek Suspension Bridge where one
could listen to the water running across the rocks as you made your way
through the dense forest.
Went back to the visitor center and began my "Dreamtime Gorge Walk" with an
Indigenous Kuku Yalanji guide who demonstrated plant use, food and
traditions of his people. One of the traditions is the painting on the arm
when leaving their particular area, these symbols show which territory they
are from, their tribe or family, how many siblings, if there is a family
member who has died recently and the white dots on all of this indicates
they are of the rainforest. Their culture is thought to be over 9000 years
old.
