March 9th - Papeete - Part Two

Papeete means water basket in the Tahitian language. A stream runs through
Bougainville Park and people used to bring their gourds and take pape
(water) home in their ete (baskets). Although not large, it was a lovely
park with the water lilies in the stream and the banks are lined with flowers.

Before meeting back up with my friends for lunch I visited Le Marche
Municipale. In this two story public market one can find flowers, produce,
fish and meats. They also sell many locally made products, including woven
baskets, hats and even grass skirts (I'll bet you don't have one of those).
All around the building on the outside there are pareos hanging displayed
like a rainbow. There are more of these on the second floor along with
clothing and household items made with these bright and colorful fabrics.
And of course there are numerous shops selling pearls and souvenir items. At
some of the booths you can watch the items being sewn and the jewelry being
made. Very busy place.
When I stopped for a cold soda a little girl heard the music that
was playing an hopped on the stage and danced for us. She was just as cute
as could be and was having a great time.
