The journey began with my flights to Sydney, Australia. After a couple days in Sydney I met up with my friends from Denver on the MS Noordam I have been to most of these places before - this journey is not so much about exploring, but enjoying ship life and spending time with Sandra and Allan Benson.
At the small, remote islands on the beginning leg of the journey one is welcomed to palm draped islands by the friendly Islanders. The reefs offer great snorkeling and lovely beaches, with a backdrop of lush green hills and valleys. One is in the tropics, so you have to expect at least one daily rain shower.
Our plans for these islands were to do walk abouts or Hop On/Off buses. In Noumea, New Caledonia I was impressed by how clean and modern the area was. There were a large number of yachts in a secluded/protected harbor and lots of restaurants. We were in Suva,Fiji on a Sunday, so we took the "Jesus" mini bus into town for some great shopping (most stores were closed), and were treated to a free tour of their hometown on the way back to the ship. The Royal Palace pictured is in Nuku Alofa, Tonga. It was prefabricated in New Zealand, shipped to Tonga, and erected in 1867.
Since we crossed the International Date Line I am getting back the day I lost traveling to Sydney. Two Fridays, nothing wrong with that!
