New Castle Upon Tyne, UK

Newcastle, as it is called today, is located in the northeast of England on the banks of the River Tyne. The city has undergone several transformations since it began life as a Roman fort in 122. It was under Norman rule in 1080 that the city gained its current name.

In contrast to its industrial heritage, the city is also known for its environmental awareness and is even planning to become the first Carbon Neutral town in the UK.

Took a tour into the city to see the "Seven Bridges" that cross the river and the sandstone buildings developed (and being preserved) in the 1830s.

Stopped for a vist at Newcastle Cathedral of St. Nicholas, founded in 1091, destroyed by fire in 1216. The current building was completed in 1350. Heading out of the city our guide pointed out another major cathedral, the home of the Newcastle United football team, she stated that there is probably more praying here.

Last stop was out to see the gigantic Angel of the North sculpture which dominates the surrounding landscape and can be seen for miles around.

Sunny all day without a drop of rain!
