January 25th, 2017 - Hilo, Hawaii

After 2,174 miles and five days sailing across the Pacific from San Diego we
finally arrived in Hilo, Hawaii.
Hilo, is the "wet side" of the island, so no surprise that we were greeted
with some light rain. Picked up a rental car and headed North, leaving Hilo
and any precipitation behind.
Everyone in our group had been to the island numerous times so we stayed
away from the typical tourist sights, enjoying the scenery and spectacular
views along the coastline.
Stopped at a zip line center in Hakalau that had great views of the Umauma
triple-tier water falls.
Continued the journey along the coast to Laupahoehoe Point before turning
inland to drive though the Kohala Mountain Range. Previously I had read
that somewhere along this drive it is so windy that one can lean into the
wind and not fall down - from my experience I can believe it!
Finally made it as far North as the road, and we could go before heading
back to the ship. The last time I had been this far North on the island of
Hawaii was in 2007, and it was just as rugged and beautiful as I remembered.
