December 1st - Kauai

Took an early morning flight over to Kauai to show a friend this unique and
special island.

Headed North and took an old sugarcane road leading us to Wailua Falls. The
light was supposed to be best for photographing the falls in the morning.

Got back on the main road heading North, only making it as far as Kapaa, it
was raining and did not look like it was going to clear up. Supposedly,
eleven miles West of Wailua lies one of the wettest places on earth, with an
average yearly rainfall of 440 inches - so based on that information and
the fact that I have never been to the Northern part of the island when it
did not at some point rain, I turned around.

Went South and West to Waimea Canyon State Park and Kokee State Park - this
area is sometimes called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific". In addition to
the canyons and amphitheater, unlike the Grand Canyon, it is lush and
green. The views were constantly changing colors as the day progressed as
the sun and clouds moved up and down the canyon walls.

One often sees chickens and roosters running wild on many islands, but I
would venture to guess that on Kauai there are more chickens than people.
There are so many, that they sell souvenir hats and T-shirts with colorful
roosters on them.

Drove through Koloa and stopped at Poipu Beach for a quick snack and visit
with John and Diane St. John. Got a flight back to Honolulu and arrived back
to the ship before it was due to leave that evening.
